Writing

 

Think of alternate assignments that allow the student to use their creativity and also that get the information that you are looking for. 

 

Examples:

      Book reports

       ~videos book reports with role playing

       ~maps

       ~dioramas

       ~mini films

       ~board games

       ~story boards

       ~carton books

       ~musicals

       ~costumes and paper dolls

       ~video interview with the author

       ~puppet show

       ~journal/diary

       ~game show

       ~powerpoint presentation

       ~quilt (paper or cloth)

       ~Venn diagram

       ~mural (timeline)

       ~trial

     

Researching (famous person)

 ~create a headstone

 ~create a birth certificate

 ~make a timeline of events to include the information you are looking for, such as:  DOB, death, important events in the years between.

 ~business cards

 ~newspaper articles

 

If you really want a report in writing format, allow dictation (either with a tape recorder or to another person) and have the student do their own proofing.

Teach the students to web.  There are software programs which will help with this such as Inspiration or Kidspiration.

Most VSL students have trouble with handwriting.  For some the mental images come to them so quickly that their hands cannot keep up.  Keyboarding is a great skill for VSL learners, as the letters on the keyboard are always in the same place and he/she can usually type faster than he/she can write.
